Editor’s Pick: 3StepDivorce

We selected 3StepDivorce as the best online divorce service. See our 3StepDivorce.com Review for an in-depth review of our pick for best national online divorce forms.

Who has the best online divorce service?

We believe the best online divorce service is 3 Step Divorce. Their price is great and can be paid in monthly installments. They also offer a $50 cash rebate and a free Will for both spouses. A+ ranking with the Better Business Bureau and numerous #1 rankings.

Why use an online divorce service?

Figuring out how to handle your divorce can be overwhelming. Hiring a divorce lawyer is one option, but lawyers are expensive and rarely ever conducive to a stress-free divorce. The average divorce with a lawyer costs $11,000! Online divorce services have become a popular alternative to a divorce lawyer. Most online divorce services cost less than what a lawyer charges every hour and all online divorce services include the divorce papers necessary to file and get a divorce along with instructions on how, when and where to use them.

How do online divorce services work?

Most of the top online divorce services work in a similar fashion. You (1) confirm you are eligible to use their divorce service; (2) complete an online questionnaire; (3) download your personalized divorce forms and step-by-step instructions; and (4) sign and file.

How long does a divorce take?

The length of time it will take you to get a divorce depends on the court and the facts of your divorce case. An uncontested divorce takes 1-3 months in most states. A contested divorce (where the spouses can’t agree on the terms of the divorce) can take 1 year or longer.

What is an “uncontested divorce”?

An uncontested divorce is defined as a divorce in which both spouses will agree on the terms of the divorce. By signing the Decree of Divorce, the spouse are indicating to the judge that they are in full agreement on the terms therein.

Can I use an online divorce service?

Using an online divorce service is not the same as hiring a lawyer. If your divorce is uncontested, you can typically use an online divorce service. An uncontested divorce exists when both spouses will agree on the terms of the divorce.

Should I use an online divorce service?

Online divorce services are ideal for uncontested divorces (when both spouses will agree on the terms of the divorce and sign the divorce decree). However, if your divorce is complicated, you’ll want to consider hiring a lawyer to navigate the complexities. Examples of complicated divorces would be: (1) you can’t locate your spouse; (2) existence of domestic violence; (3) restraining order is desired; or (4) paternity is an issue.

Are online divorce services legit?

Every online divorce service that we reviewed provides a 100% guarantee on their divorce papers. Online divorce papers are legit and very common. In fact, divorce papers used by attorneys are actually the same (or very similar) to the online divorce papers that are available to the general public via an online divorce service.

Can I file my own divorce papers?

Yes, either spouse can prepare and file divorce papers. An online divorce service can provide the personalized divorce papers you’ll need along with instructions on how to use them.

Which spouse pays the divorce filing fee?

The petitioner (i.e., the spouse who files the petition for divorce) pays the filing fee. In some instances, the filing fee can be waived if the petitioner can show that he or she cannot afford to pay the filing fee.

Will I be satisfied with an online divorce service?

The key to being satisfied with your divorce form purchase depends on your personality. For example, if you are inquisitive and like to ask questions, you will want to purchase divorce forms from a publisher that offers unlimited customer service. Likewise, if you don’t mind filling in blanks, you can save a few dollars by purchasing do-it-yourself divorce forms.

Save money by purchasing online divorce forms

Buying online divorce forms can save you hundreds if not thousands of dollars. The hourly fees charged by divorce attorneys typically start at $150/hour and can be up to four times this amount for an experienced attorney.

It shouldn’t surprise you that divorce attorneys use forms similar to the divorce forms you are thinking about purchasing.

Divorce forms are only useful in uncontested divorce situations. An uncontested divorce exists when: (1) your spouse agrees to the terms of the divorce decree (this is accomplished by obtaining his/her signature on the actual divorce decree that will be presented to the divorce court); or (2) your spouse fails to file a response in the divorce proceeding. An uncontested divorce exists even if you anticipate having arguments or disputes. The key to having an uncontested divorce and thus saving thousands of dollars is to resolve your differences before the court signs the divorce decree. If the proposed divorce decree presented to the court includes the signature of each spouse, the court will not need to have a trial to determine the terms of the divorce decree.

Most divorce forms will work in the state in which they are advertised to work. The key to being satisfied with your divorce form purchase depends on your personality. For example, if you are inquisitive and like to ask questions, you will want to purchase divorce forms from a publisher that offers customer service. Likewise, if you don’t mind filling in blanks, you can save a few dollars by purchasing do-it-yourself divorce forms.

3 Step Divorce Review

Overall Ranking: #1
3 Step Divorce was our selection for best online divorce form service. Our comprehensive 3StepDivorce Review can be viewed below. Don’t forget to compare 3 Step Divorce to the best online divorce services.
Go To 3stepdivorce.com

How Much is 3 Step Divorce?

3StepDivorce.com charges a one-time flat fee of $299, with no additional fees. You can also opt to pay in installments (2 monthly payments of $157; or 3 monthly payments of $109; or even 4 monthly payments of $84). Divorce can be expensive — even with online divorce forms — so we can see how the installment option could be helpful.

When you consider the bonus items offered, such as free wills for both spouses and access to divorce eBooks and manuals, we believe 3 Step Divorce is the best value of all the major divorce form providers.

How Fast is 3 Step Divorce?

If you need your divorce forms completed quickly, 3 Step Divorce is a great choice. Using the company’s website, you can have your divorce papers completed, printed, and ready for signatures in less than an hour. Documents can be printed immediately, with no wait time.

How Easy is 3 Step Divorce to Use?

As the name suggests, 3 Step Divorce breaks down the process of completing your online divorce forms into 3 simple steps. Users create an account, answer questions, and instantly generate and print completed forms, along with step-by-step filing procedures.

Some customers may find the question-and-answer format easier to use than a fill-in-the-blank format. Instead of typing answers into a form, you simply answer questions, and 3 Step Divorce’s software fills in the blanks for you. We like the added feature of being able to answer questions at your own pace, and saving your answers as you go along. This way, if you get interrupted (or need to look for an answer to a question), you can save your progress, log out, and return to your forms when you are ready.

Full Editing Capabilities

You can change answers, reprint, or edit your forms as often as you like, with no additional fees. Some competitors, including LegalZoom, only provide editing capabilities for 30 days.

Bonus #1: Free Will (for each spouse)

In our 3 Step Divorce review, we discovered a number of “Bonus Features” that set this company apart from its competitors. For example, the 3 Step Divorce offers a free Will for both spouses. Since it’s a good idea to update your will after a divorce, this is a logical bonus feature that is really appreciated.

Bonus #2: Free Name Change for Wife

The name change process can be a hassle — and even if you think you’ve followed all the right steps, in the right order, it can be easy to forget to notify an important party. Wives may or may not choose to change their names after a divorce, but if they do, a guide like this could help make the process simpler.

Bonus #3: Online Divorce Negotiation Center

We couldn’t find a lot of information about this on the 3 Step Divorce website, but it is advertised as an “online negotiation tool.” If it does what the company claims, you may be able to successfully settle some issues without getting an attorney involved, which could save you hundreds if not thousands of dollars.

Bonus #4: 40+ Self-Help Divorce eBooks

This is a unique and very useful feature. 3 Step Divorce customers get access to eBooks on a range of divorce topics, including legal, financial and emotional issues.

Bonus #5: $50 Cash Rebate

If you file your divorce paperwork no later than end of the day after you purchase your divorce papers, 3StepDivorce will give you a $50 cash rebate.

Customer Support

Toll free phone and email support are included with 3 Step Divorce’s service platform. Phones are answered Monday through Friday, from 9 am -5 pm EST. Phone support is a useful feature, because sometimes it’s easier — and faster — to have your questions answered by a real person.

Does 3 Step Divorce Provide Attorney Support?

3 Step Divorce does not provide attorney support or legal advice. This means their service is not a substitute for an attorney — however, if you have an uncontested divorce and prefer to file on your own, it can be a good solution. Some of the other top divorce form providers offer legal advice for an additional fee which can be handy if you need legal advice.

State-Specific Info

3 Step Divorce provides state-specific divorce forms, which is critical because each state has different regulations pertaining to divorce. The state specific forms allows them to guarantee their forms.

Guarantee

3 Step Divorce offers a 100% Money Back Guarantee that its documents will be accepted by the court. If documents are rejected and it is due to the fault of 3 Step Divorce, you will receive a 100% refund. See the full Guarantee.

Focus on Divorce

Because 3 Step Divorce focuses on online divorce forms, their knowledge base and service offerings are more specialized than larger online legal form providers. Specialization may mean that a legal form provider will be more up-to-date on regulatory changes.

3 Step Divorce Reviews and Testimonials

You can find over 100 positive 3 Step Divorce reviews and testimonials on the 3StepDivorce website and another 1,300 on TrustPilot. The 3 Step Divorce reviews on their website are accompanied by state symbols, so you can scroll down and see what others in your state are saying about 3StepDivorce. You may have to look a little deeper for negative reviews. In fact, as of this online review, we couldn’t find any negative reviews for 3 Step Divorce.com.

In Business Since

3 Step Divorce protects its customers with McAfee and Norton Secured, which is powered by VeriSign. These are leading web security companies. CompleteCase Review

Overall Ranking: #2
CompleteCase is one of best online divorce form companies. You can read the in-depth Complete Case review below, but we also recommend you compare CompleteCase to the best online divorce services.
Go To CompleteCase

How Much is CompleteCase?

CompleteCase charges a one time fee of $299 for their divorce forms, with or without children. The $299 price point is slightly higher than average amongst the non-lawyer divorce form websites, but equal to 3StepDivorce. Ultimately, the $299 price point is well below the attorney assisted divorce solutions and only marginally more expensive than the competition.

Speed

By using the CompleteCase website, you can have your divorce forms completed, printed, and ready for signatures in about 30 minutes. Documents can be printed immediately, with no wait time.

Customer Support

CompleteCase offers unlimited phone and email support from an experienced divorce professional (24 hours a day and 7 days a week). While unlimited support is not unusual for this price point, it is not something you would receive from the cheaper alternatives. 24/7 support is very unique and could come in handy.

Editing Capabilities

There is no need to complete the divorce questionnaire immediately as your account will be open for 30 days, and you can extend your access for a monthly fee. You can save your progress on the questionnaire too. Answer some questions now and the rest later. You will never lose your place or have to repeat any answers. Return at your leisure to complete the process.

Bonus #1: $49 Last Will & Testament

CompleteCase offers their divorce form customers a discount on their Last Will and Testament (discounted to $49). If you have an existing Will, a divorce is an event that should cause you to revisit your will. The Will offered by CompleteCase is a very useful bonus.

Attorney Support

CompleteCase does not provide attorney support or legal advice. This means their service is not a substitute for an attorney — however, if you have an uncontested divorce and prefer to file on your own, it can be a good solution.

State-Specific Info

CompleteCase offers state specific information for all 50 US States and Canada.

Guarantee

CompleteCase provides a 100% guarantee that their forms will be accepted by the court. If the forms are not accepted due to the fault of CompleteCase, they will make any changes requested by the court or judge (without charge), or a refund will be issued for the full purchase price (subject to a $25.00 handling fee).

We wish CompleteCase would give you a choice to a full refund or free revisions. Instead, it looks like it is their choice. All in all, this is a fairly standard money-back guarantee.

Focus on Divorce

CompleteCase is not a legal document warehouse. They specialize in divorce documents only. These forms change from time to time throughout the country. Unlike a form documentation mill, CompleteCase tracks such changes and makes them before their customers are impacted.

CompleteCase Complaints

Our CompleteCase Review discovered that they have 45 complaints in the last three years according to the Better Business Bureau (as of December 2019) all of which were answered or resolved in a manner that was satisfactory to the customer. While you would like to see zero complaints, you must consider how many customers they have (over 700,000 since 2000).

In Business Since

CompleteCase has been in business since 2000. In the online legal form industry this is a long time.

Security

CompleteCase is protected by Verisign, a leader in the secure encryption technology industry. Additionally CompleteCase houses their servers in one of the most security conscious datacenters in the United States.

CompleteCase has been featured in national news outlets such as Good Morning America, the Today Show, USA Today, NY Times, & LA Times.

Legalzoom Divorce Forms

Overall Ranking: #3
LegalZoom is still the most popular legal form provider in the world. Their Wills and LLCs are their most popular offerings, but their $499 online divorce service is worth considering.

Legalzoom's prices tend to be on the high end, but still far less than what an attorney would charge. Legalzoom's divorce forms are $499.

Customer Support

LegalZoom allows you to check the status of your order online anytime. This is a great feature. If you need to talk to a live person, you have to call or email during business hours (Monday through Friday 6:00am to 7:00pm PST).

Attorney Support

If you need to speak with an attorney, LegalZoom now offers assistance in getting you in touch with an attorney in your area.

LegalZoom does not offer as much state specific information on its website as some of the smaller more specialized competitors. They do offer monthly subscriptions that provide you with access to an attorney in your area.

Specialty

Unlike some of their competition, LegalZoom does not specialize on one kind of form. However, they are large enough and have enough resources that the quality of their product does not suffer as much as we would have thought.

Complaints

At the time fo this LegalZoom review, they had 58 complaints filed with the Better Business Bureau. At first we thought this was too many complaints. However, after further review, it appears that the number of complaints has a direct relationship to the total number of customers and LegalZoom is not proportionately different than their competitors.

In Business Since

LegalZoom has been in business since 2001. In the online legal form industry this is a long time.

DivorceWriter Reviews & Testimonials

There are a number of positive DivorceWriter testimonials on the DivorceWriter website.

Pro Se Planning Inc. is also the parent company for LegacyWriter.com, a do-it-yourself estate planning website, and TotalLegal.com, offering custom legal documents and free or discounted attorney services.

BBB Accredited

The parent company for DivorceWriter, Pro Se Planning Inc., has been a BBB Accredited Business since May 1, 2003. It currently has an A+ rating, which is the highest available rating.

Complaints

When conducting our DivorceWriter review, we found that Pro Se Planning, Inc. has received 11 complaints with the BBB over the last three years, with three complaints closed in the last 12 months. Three complainants verified the issue was resolved to their satisfaction. That leaves eight unresolved complaints. While that may sound like a lot, it does not seem excessive for a company of this size, especially over a three-year period. And, the company’s A+ rating means it is still in very good standing with the BBB.

In Business Since

DivorceWriter has been offering online divorce forms since 2005. Its parent company, Pro Se Planning Inc. has been around even longer, although we couldn’t find a year of incorporation listed on their website.

Security

The DivorceWriter website has been tested and certified secure by McAfee Secure, one of the world's leading security technology providers.

Our Conclusion

The DivorceWriter.com web design looks a bit outdated and less sophisticated than some of its competitors, and the services it offers are pretty basic. However, its BBB rating and testimonials indicate that the company is trustworthy and professional. DivorceWriter’s low price makes it very appealing, but we view other popular divorce form providers as better options.
